Two TEICHMANN gantry cranes for major renovation of the Kerenzberg tunnel in Switzerland

The approx. 4 km long Kerenzerberg tunnel, which has been in operation since 1986, is a road tunnel along Lake Walen in the canton of Glarus in Switzerland and part of the southern A3 Zurich-Chur. The tunnel is now subject of extensive renovation measures.

In addition to the renovation of the main tunnel, a new approximately 5.5 km long escape tunnel is to be built parallelly to the existing tunnel as the existing escape routes and ventilation systems of the main tunnel no longer meet the new, modern safety requirements.

The new escape tunnel enables travellers in the event of an emergency to escape the main tunnel via a total of 18 exit points. In addition, the new escape tunnel has a modern ventilation system through which toxic gases are discharged in the event of a fire.

The tunneling of the new escape tunnel is carried out with a TBM. The TeichmannGroup supplied two gantry cranes for the transport of tunnel segments at the construction site and the direct supply of the tunnel boring machine with segments. The two gantry cranes will be rented by the customer for the approx. 4-year project duration.

The two 2x10t gantry cranes with a span of 40 m are equipped with a completely renewed cabling and electrical control system with frequency converter.

Despite difficult weather conditions and continuous snowfall at the tunnel construction site in Filzbach both cranes were successfully installed and comissioned on time and to the customers full satisfaction.

In order to guarantee the highest possible availability of the cranes for the important tunnel project, the TeichmannGroup will offer technical support around the clock, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The on-site technical customer support will be carried out by the TeichmannGroup-service location of the  in Basel.
