Historic harbour crane becomes crane café in Basel, Switzerland

An old harbour crane from 1971, which had been dismantled and stored after the port closure of the St. Johann port in Basel in 2010, is now being rebuilt on the other side of the river at the Klybeckquai and made accessible to the public in the form of a year-long café.

TEICHMANN CRANES from Essen, who had dismantled and stored the old harbor crane already in 2010, re-assembled the historic harbor, which had previously been given to the city of Basel by the Novartis Group on the other river side and converted the crane according to the gastronomic plans.

For example, the crane supports were shortened on the water side, the engine house, gearboxes, motors and electric controls were removed to create space for a small café at a height of 9m. In addition, an observation platform with a grating grid of approx. 60m² was built on supports, where visitors can soon enjoy the view over the harbour at a height of 7m.
